About Me

I am a working writer of short stories/novels with a BA in English from the College of Idaho, an MFA in Creative Writing from Boise State University and a PhD in English with a Creative Writing emphasis from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

My literary short stories and poems have appeared in The Iowa Review, Zyzzyva, Hotel America, been short-listed for the Pushcart Prize, and anthologized in The Best of the West series. I got my start (and my agent) by writing literary fiction, but now I'm best known for my young adult novels with HarperTeen, including the New York Times bestselling UNEARTHLY series, and the New York Times bestselling contemporary novel THE LAST TIME WE SAY GOODBYE. My newest book, the New York Times bestselling comic fantasy MY LADY JANE, was released in June 2016. I recently finished my sixth novel for HarperTeen, and I'm at work on a seventh.

I taught creative writing and literature at Pepperdine University in Southern California for seven years before I moved back to the Boise area in 2014 to be close to friends and family. I grew up in Idaho Falls.

The published-author part of my writing life has been a crazy, wonderful time, full of pinch-me moments, which you can follow on my website www.cynthiahandbooks.com, but I also love to teach and am always eager to meet my batches of new students every semester.
